People’s Artist, director, writer and actor Yervant Manaryan died on the morning of February 19, in the 96th year of his life.
He directed a series of documentary and feature films, wrote screenplays for “Tjvjik,” “The Master and the Servant” and other films, and appeared in a number of well-known films, such as the motion picture “The Bride from the North.”
Yervant Manaryan founded the “Agulis” puppet theater-workshop.
In 2003, Yervant Manaryan was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Armenia, in 2018 — after the Velvet Revolution — the title of People’s Artist, and in 2019 the title of Honorary Citizen of Yerevan.
Manaryan was one of those rare artists who also had an active civic stance, participating for many years in opposition protests.
On the occasion of Yervant Manaryan’s death, condolences were sent by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Armen Sarkissian.
“Yervant Manaryan was a brilliant People’s Artist, whose created characters enriched the art of Armenian cinema and took their unforgettable place in the hearts of the Armenian audience. He was a great actor, screenwriter, director and pedagogue who enjoyed great nationwide love and renown.
Beyond being a distinguished artist, Yervant Manaryan was an active citizen of the Republic of Armenia, who for years took a stand in the struggle for justice, always expressing his clear position,” — according to the Prime Minister’s Office’s Department of Information and Public Relations, this was said in particular in Nikol Pashinyan’s telegram.
“Yervant Manaryan’s activity was a rich theatrical season that, unfortunately, was interrupted. Even in the ninth decade of his life, he continued to make plans and remain faithful to creative thinking.
Yervant Manaryan was truly a People’s Artist; he was loved and appreciated by both adults and children. His impressive characters and his winged words will always remain in the people’s memory,” — according to the President’s Office, Armen Sarkissian wrote in particular in his message.
It should be noted that by the decision of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, a government commission has been formed to organize Yervant Manaryan’s funeral. Yervant Manaryan’s requiem service will take place on February 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the St. Hovhannes Church of Kond.
The final farewell will be on February 22, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., at the Hakob Paronyan State Theater of Musical Comedy.
