Areg Danakulyan, one of the professors and scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and his scientific team have been awarded the “Arms Control Person of the Year” prize.
The Arms Control Association declares as Person of the Year those individuals or institutions that do tangible work in counterbalancing weapons, preventing the proliferation of weapons, or offering effective options for raising awareness about weapons threats.
Areg Danakulyan and his scientific team were deemed worthy of this prize for developing an innovative process for verifying nuclear disarmament through neutron beams.
The vote was conducted between 12 December and 9 January, and Areg Danakulyan and his team received the most votes, leaving behind the other candidates, such as the President of France, Macron, and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mediamax had earlier reported that Areg Danakulyan said that “receiving the prize is important for them inasmuch as it shows that the world sees the importance of science in building a safe and peaceful future for our children, as well as the contribution of Armenian scientists to that most important work.”
