Olympic champion, three-time world champion, and four-time European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Artur Aleksanyan has been appointed National Ambassador of UNICEF in Armenia. The official ceremony took place today.
The Olympic champion will support UNICEF by promoting children’s right to healthy living and nutrition, giving priority to the most vulnerable children. “It is a great honor for me to become a goodwill ambassador. I accepted the offer immediately because it is connected to the future of children,” said Aleksanyan. The athlete from Gyumri noted that according to statistics, 14 percent of children under 5 are overweight, while 9 percent are undernourished. “Every child, in order to reach their dreams and goals, must first be healthy by eating well,” he stressed.
UNICEF has been operating in Armenia since 1994, and for 25 years now it has supported the Armenian government, having developed and implemented reforms aimed at eliminating gaps hindering the realization of the rights of Armenia’s children, with special attention to the most needy and vulnerable children.
Among Armenian athletes, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a footballer for the Armenian national team and “Roma,” is also a goodwill ambassador.
