During Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Chavushoglu’s visit to Uruguay, a scandal took place. Chavushoglu responded to the protests of Armenians gathered in front of the Turkish embassy in Montevideo with the “grey wolf” sign.
Uruguay’s foreign minister summoned the Turkish ambassador to the ministry to provide explanations regarding that sign. The meeting is scheduled for Monday.
Uruguay’s Armenian organizations condemned Chavushoglu’s action.
The visit of the head of Turkey’s foreign ministry to Montevideo on April 23, on the eve of the day of remembrance of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, aroused the discontent of the Armenian community. The local Armenian community, taking into account the atrocities committed by security personnel of Turkey’s high-ranking representatives in various countries, had asked the country’s interior minister to strengthen the security measures dedicated to the Armenian Genocide.
On April 24, during the event taking place at the “Armenia” square in the capital, a speech by Uruguay’s foreign minister is planned. On April 26, within parliament, the country’s vice president will deliver a speech.
Religious ceremonies, a march, demonstrations and other events are also planned.
