Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned US President Joe Biden’s April 24 message, declaring that it condemns “such statements and decisions that distort historical realities for political purposes.”
In the statement by Turkey’s foreign ministry, it is emphasized that “Turkey remembers with respect all Ottoman citizens, including the pains experienced by Armenians, and rejects attempts to turn that grief into a matter of politics.” It was also noted that “Ankara favors the study of the events of 1915 within the framework of impartial scientific and legal principles and, in this regard, has proposed the establishment of a commission of historians, opening its archives.”
“Turkey is making efforts to establish peace and stability in the region and the world. The normalization process begun with Armenia is another indicator of this mindset,” the statement said.
Turkey’s foreign minister also responded to the US president’s message. Mevlut Cavusoglu on Twitter accused Western leaders, particularly Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron, of a hypocritical approach.
“Some Western leaders recently defend the view that ‘genocide’ can only be established by a court decision. That is true. But the same people have used the word ‘genocide’ for the events of 1915 for political motives, without the decision of a competent court, and this is the most striking example of their hypocrisy,” Cavusoglu wrote.
