US legislators are discussing a legislative bill on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, reports the US national radio station NPR.
“Members of Parliament are discussing both the adoption of a law on imposing sanctions against Turkey and the adoption of a law on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Earlier, Congress had discussed the question of whether the events of 1915, when 1.5 million Armenians were killed, should be qualified as a ‘genocide’. The Turkish government has historically opposed that recognition and, as expected, will resist both initiatives,” the report said.
Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, noted that the Turkish government will obviously be displeased. “I am sure the Turkish government is unhappy, but we are also unhappy with the Turkish government,” he said.
