The renovation works of the Surp Giragos Armenian Church in Diyarbakir have been completed. The reopening of Surp Giragos is scheduled for May 7, and the first liturgy on May 8.
This was reported by Akunq.net, based on information received from the governing board of the Surp Giragos Church Foundation.
According to the source, the Surp Giragos Armenian Church had suffered great damage as a result of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict in Diyarbakir. For this reason, the church had been closed since 2015.
The official reopening of the church will take place on May 7 at 4:00 PM. It has been renovated by Turkey’s Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
Let us recall that Surp Giragos, considered one of the largest churches in the Middle East, had been renovated and reopened in 2011 after the Genocide.
Although the church had no permanent clergy, its very existence played a significant role in the revival of the Armenians of Diyarbakir and the reorganization of the Armenian community there.
