Armenia won its first gold medal at the European Weightlifting Championship taking place in Yerevan:
During the two-lift competition, 19-year-old Gor Sahakyan recorded a total of 320 kilograms, becoming European champion.
In the snatch discipline of the 67-kilogram category, he lifted 140 kilograms, then 145 kg, surpassing his Turkish rival by 4 kilograms. His third attempt at 147 kg failed. In this discipline he won the small gold medal.
In the clean and jerk, Sahakyan lifted 170 and 175 kg. In this discipline as well, the young weightlifter won the small gold medal. The newly crowned European champion surpassed his rivals by 15 kilograms.
Juan Acaran Mendoza, representing Spain, became the European silver medalist with a total of 305 kg.
