The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, has stated that the parties are currently carrying out search operations for the bodies of the dead in the territories under their control in Nagorno-Karabakh, but along the line of contact, where fighting took place and mines exploded, it is difficult to find bodies, reported lenta.ru.
Maurer explained that there is an established procedure in this matter, according to which bodies are removed with dignity, their identity is recognised, and then the bodies are handed over to relatives.
According to Maurer, if this work is delayed, the bodies will rot by winter, which complicates the process of identifying the bodies. In addition, this could lead to contamination of the soil.
It was noted that the Red Cross is now preparing to increase the number of its staff in Karabakh.
“We will increase our presence fourfold. We have had quite few people there. We are now planning to send an additional 400-500 people to that region,” emphasised the head of the committee, adding that the funding allocated for this direction has also increased, rising from 11 million to 49.4 million dollars.
