The Armenian National Committee of Cyprus has expressed its gratitude to the Mayor and Municipal Council of Paphos, who, responding to the request of the country’s Armenian community, very quickly effected a change to the name of the city’s Talaat Pasha Street, renaming it Dikeosynis (Justice). This is reported by the Armenian National Committee of Cyprus.
“Our Committee, for the first time, examined the question of changing the street’s name during its session of 14 July 2020, where it deemed it unacceptable that the name of the executioner who organised the Armenian Genocide should be honoured.
Moreover, the Parliament of Cyprus, on the occasion of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, had ratified a bill criminalising the denial of the Genocide. This decision had transferred the circumstance of honouring the Turkish perpetrator of genocide to a legal platform.
Today, we are happy to announce that the wish of us all has been realised. Our thanks to the Mayor of Paphos, Mr. Fedon Fedonos, who, without any hesitation or doubt, affirmed justice,” the statement said.
