The AGBU “Tamar and Vatche Manukyan” school operating in the state of California in the United States will close its doors at the end of this year. We learn of this from a communiqué published by the Armenian General Benevolent Union.
In the said communiqué, the Benevolent Union, announcing the decision to close the school, also notes that due to insufficient financial conditions, the school will be merged with the “Manukyan-Demirjian” school operating in Los Angeles.
The news of the school’s closure quickly spread within the community, creating a wave of protest not only among AGBU members but also in the most diverse circles of the community.
In a Facebook post on this matter, Hagop Martirosyan, deputy editor of the ADL official organ “Nor Or,” also expressed his concern, calling for an awakening on the part of those responsible for this decision.
He specifically wrote: “Where are these boys and girls going to stay, Mr. Manukyan?
The endowment of an Armenian school is not a business. For centuries, Armenian schools have survived thanks to benefactors. Closing a school has today become a contagious disease. Have you too been infected? At least respect the memory of your father and especially your grandfather.
You should feel guilty toward this youth; with this act of yours, you will have pushed them onto the path of assimilation. May the Armenian feeling in your soul awaken, before it is too late.”
