UN Secretary-General António Guterres has offered former German Chancellor Angela Merkel an advisory position in one of the United Nations’ bodies.
The position in question is head of an advisory department on global public goods. The body’s remit would include the regulation of international matters, including in the areas of trade and flight safety.
The former German leader personally called the UN chief and declined the offer to work in the organisation.
Angela Merkel, 67, led the German government from 2005 to 2021. In one of her last interviews as Chancellor, she stated that she was leaving politics for good.
