The Guardian reports that in Lyon, France, surgeon Aram Ghazaryan has performed an exceptional operation, transplanting two arms from the shoulder section onto Felix Gretarsson, a 48-year-old Icelander. This is considered the world’s first such transplant.
The man lost his arms 23 years ago as a result of an accident at work. The medical team considers the operation successful because the man is recovering, and, as Aram Ghazaryan stated during a press conference, he is able to bend his elbow. It was noted that years were required to find a suitable donor, and about 50 medical personnel were involved in the preparation process for the operation.
Aram Ghazaryan is a distinguished doctor specializing in the field of upper extremity surgery; he is the head of France’s hand transplant surgical team and has planned to carry out operations in Armenia as well.
