Bob Dole (Robert Joseph Dole), a World War II veteran, former Republican senator and 1996 US presidential candidate, has died at the age of 99.
Dole represented the state of Kansas in the US Senate for 27 years, from 1969 to 1996, and before that served eight years as a member of the House of Representatives. In the 1996 presidential election, he was the Republican candidate but was defeated by Democrat Bill Clinton, who was re-elected to a second term.
In February of this year, Dole announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Throughout his entire career, Bob Dole was one of the most active American statesmen advocating for Armenian interests in the US. For many years, he advanced bills for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
In 2019, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian signed a decree awarding the state prize of the republic to Robert (Bob) Dole, former US Republican senator, well-known advocate and lobbyist for Armenian interests.
