Der Tagesspiegel: ‘Gray Wolves’ Could Move the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict to Germany

“Russia helps Armenia, Turkey helps Azerbaijan. The ‘Gray Wolves’ could also advance the demands of Turkish nationalists in Germany,” noted the German Der Tagesspiegel periodical. “Within the framework of the tense situation in the South Caucasus, state security officials and conflict resolution experts are warning about its consequences for Germany. Such actions are expected more from Turkish right-wing extremists than from Armenians and Azerbaijanis. Lively discussions are underway on this matter within the ranks of the ‘Gray Wolves,’ Turkish nationalists who largely sympathize with the ‘Nationalist Movement’ party, which is part of the governing alliance in Ankara,” the article states.

“Community leaders are conducting discussions regarding crime and the unification of the ‘Gray Wolves,’ according to which, in case of extreme necessity, the conflict should also be resolved in Germany. In essence, these are the old Ottomans,” said an official familiar with that environment.

“The Ottoman network was banned in 2018 by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer,” the newspaper wrote. “The grouping openly rebelled against the ‘Armenian Resolution’ adopted by the Bundestag in 2016, using the symbols of the ‘Gray Wolves.’ Within the ‘Gray Wolves’ circle, the idea of creating a great Turkish empire, ‘Turan,’ is widespread, which should unite the Turkish peoples from the Balkans to western China. Greeks, Kurds, and Armenians are considered enemies, while the Azerbaijani ‘brotherly people’ are considered allies.”

“In Turkey’s free extreme right-wing environment, a ‘growth in readiness for violence’ and a ‘desire for weapons’ is observed,” reports Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

“The investigation continues to identify those who organized the attack on the Armenian gathering place in Cologne and the person who set fire to the car of the Armenian Embassy in Berlin in July. The incidents were probably caused by the several-day military clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” the publication states.

“The fact that Erdogan intervenes, that the ‘Gray Wolves’ in Turkey and Germany present themselves as helpers of Azerbaijan, reduces the likelihood of resolving the conflict,” said Heiko Langner, author of the book “Crisis Zone – South Caucasus” and an employee of the ‘Left Party’ in the Bundestag.

He believes that the parties to the conflict should accept the fundamental principles of Madrid.

“According to Langner, if Turkish right-wing forces fuel the conflict, it gives Armenians arguments to preserve the liberated territories. Ultimately, the other peoples of the region are also concerned about the idea of an Islamic ‘Great Turan,'” reports Der Tagesspiegel.
