Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has unexpectedly inspected his election campaign headquarters and instructed that meticulous preparations be made for the upcoming presidential elections, Yeni Şafak reported.
“President Erdogan convened an unexpected pre-election meeting and took the pulse of his campaign machinery ahead of the 2023 elections. Erdogan listened to his staff’s views on the content and manner of preparing for the election period,” the newspaper wrote.
Turkey’s presidential elections are to take place on 18 June 2023, in which Erdogan will participate.
In Turkey, general elections (presidential and parliamentary) are held on the same day under local legislation and were originally scheduled for June 2023. The ruling People’s Alliance had earlier announced that its joint candidate would be the incumbent president, Erdogan. The opposition, in the form of an alliance of six parties, has not yet named its candidate.
The opposition had earlier stated that Turkey’s incumbent president could not participate in the elections, as this would be his third term. The head of the Ministry of Justice has repeatedly said that the upcoming presidential elections would be Erdogan’s second since Turkey’s transition from a parliamentary to a presidential system of government in 2018.
