Monument Scholar Samuel Karapetyan Posthumously Awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal

President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has signed decrees on awarding state awards of the Republic of Armenia. The decree states, in particular: “Based on the Prime Minister’s recommendation, in accordance with Article 136 of the Constitution, as well as Part 1 of Article 5.3 of the Law ‘On State Awards and Honorary Titles of the Republic of Armenia.’ On the occasion of the Independence Day holiday, for his contribution to the development of culture, to award monument scholar Samuel Gevorgi Karapetyan (posthumously) the Movses Khorenatsi Medal”:

New Cross Consecrated at Karmir Vank in the Neutral Zone of Haykadzor, a Border Village with Turkey (Photo) — Shirak Governor Nazeli Baghdasaryan, along with representatives of the regional administration and the acting head of the Ani community, Arman Saribekyan, attended on 21 January the consecration ceremony of a new cross at Karmir Vank, the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator, located in the neutral zone of Haykadzor, a village bordering Turkey. The cross was consecrated by the head of the Shirak Diocese, Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, after which it was placed on the dome of the monastery through the efforts of the residents of Haykadzor. The church had been deprived of its cross in 2015 due to strong winds. The dome and cross of the church, which has endured many trials but remained standing, had been damaged in the 1990s, during the years of independence, when Turkey had already closed the border with Armenia. According to records, the initiator of the church’s construction was Bishop Sargis, the head of Horomos Monastery. It was built by the architect Samehan between 980 and 985.
