Following the fire that broke out in the residential section of Istanbul’s Armenian Catholic Surp Prgich Church, various publications in Turkey have begun writing about the miracles of the said church.
The Turkish Hurriyet has touched upon the founding of Surp Prgich Church and the miracle that took place after it.
“The foundations of the Armenian Catholic Surp Prgich Church in the ‘Karakoy’ district were laid in 1831, and its consecration took place on 13 January 1834.
At the time of the church’s opening, the plague was spreading in Istanbul. The Armenian clergymen of the church received permission from the then Sultan Mahmud II, and they carried the icon of the Mother of God sent from the Vatican through the streets of Istanbul and prayed that the plague would disappear. And in a very short time, the plague vanished.
The inhabitants of Istanbul associated this miracle with the Armenian church, and everyone rushed to the Armenian church.
Sultan Mahmud II, in turn, as a token of gratitude, presented the Armenian Surp Prgich Church with an ornament of high-quality diamonds with 8 corners, which is hung on the icon of the Mother of God every Easter.
It should be noted that on the evening of 23 January, a fire broke out in the residential section of the Armenian Catholic Surp Prgich Church in the ‘Karakoy’ district of Istanbul, resulting in the deaths of a 75-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman.
