Spain may become one of the first countries in the world to trial the four-day working week, as the government has agreed to launch a pilot project for companies interested in the idea.
As reported by The Guardian, earlier this year one of the Spanish parties announced that the government had accepted the project to trial the four-day working week. The next meeting on this matter within the government is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
“With the four-day working week (32 hours), we are entering the most cutting-edge phase of discussion of our times,” said Íñigo Errejón, a member of the Más País party.
As the source noted, this idea has recently been gaining wide traction in various countries, from New Zealand to Germany. Proponents of the idea describe it as a means of increasing worker productivity, improving mental health, as well as combating climate change. In this regard, the innovative project becomes even more relevant under pandemic conditions, when people are forced to adapt to a new reality of work-life balance.
