Humanity has entered a “period of real danger,” and many gains in the fight against the “coronavirus” are now “being eroded.” This was stated by the organization’s Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus during a briefing for representatives of member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.
According to data published by the WHO on 11 October, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection during the pandemic has exceeded 200 million. As Ghebreyesus emphasized, the spread of the virus is fueled by social contacts, inconsistent measures in the health and public sectors, as well as “unequal vaccination.” He recalled that more than 80 percent of coronavirus vaccines have “gone to high- and middle-income countries.”
The Director-General deemed the current situation wrong, in which health workers in low-income countries “do not receive vaccines,” while in other countries residents who are not at risk of becoming seriously ill are being vaccinated.
The demands for financial resources to fight the coronavirus exceed available resources, the Director-General said.
