Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has changed his rhetoric. Just a few days ago, Aliyev was putting forward preconditions for the resumption of negotiations, but he has now begun speaking of his intention to return to the talks.
Speaking on the Russian “Channel One,” he noted that he intends to return to the negotiating table after the end of the phase of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh. “When the phase of military confrontation ends, we will return to the negotiating table. By the way, Azerbaijan has said from the very beginning of the military operations that we are not leaving the negotiation process, we expect a political solution,” he said.
It is evident that after the crushing successes of the Armenian armed forces, the President of Azerbaijan has revised his approaches. Following his statements putting forward preconditions, the international community has also intensified its calls for an immediate and unconditional cessation of military operations. The statement by the leaders of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries — Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump — was also directed at this.
