Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared on 4 May that the Zangezur corridor is a reality: “At the same time, major infrastructure projects are currently being implemented in the Zangilan district. Among them, I wish to mention the transport infrastructure, which constitutes the main part of the Zangezur corridor,” said Aliyev during a remote meeting with Vahid Hajiyev, who has been appointed the president’s special representative in the Zangilan district.
According to Aliyev, in the coming months the international airport in Zangilan will be put into operation, which “will become an important means of resolving economic, communication and security issues.” “As for the Zangezur corridor, this corridor is already a reality. Both the railway and the highway passing through the territory of the Zangilan district will not only connect the main part of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, but will also become a new route for international freight transport; it will be an international route.”
In response to official Baku’s statements about the opening of the sovereign corridor of Zangezur, Yerevan persistently emphasises that there is “no corridor logic” in the trilateral statements.
