In the US state of Massachusetts, Astghik Alemyan, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, has died at the age of 109.
Astghik was five years old when she lost her parents and brothers and was left completely orphaned. She lived in one of the orphanages of Syria until the age of 12, after which her uncle Garabed helped her and her sister Anna move to the United States.
Beginning in the 1980s, Alemyan participated every year in events dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Genocide, held within the state legislature. At the age of 90, Astghik, together with her family, visited Egypt and Syria, where she had spent her childhood.
