US President Joe Biden’s statement, in which he qualifies the slaughter perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire as the Armenian Genocide, will complicate relations within NATO.
According to the TASS agency, this opinion was expressed by Latvia’s Minister of Defence Artis Pabriks.
“The US President’s position on the long-standing issue of the Armenian Genocide will only complicate cooperation between two NATO countries at a time when it is most needed. I can give the same advice to those Latvian parliamentarians who want to buy forgiveness for themselves by sacrificing national interests,” the minister wrote on his Twitter page.
Juris Jurašs, a deputy of the Saeima (Latvia’s parliament), had announced on 23 April that the legislative body would discuss a declaration condemning the Armenian Genocide the following week. The draft document was submitted to the Saeima by more than 40 deputies.
Let us recall that the 46th US President Joe Biden used the term “Armenian Genocide” in his 24 April message, noting that the systematic annihilation of Armenians was organised by the Ottoman authorities.
