Thousands of Catalan protesters took to the streets last night to voice their opposition to the visit of Spain’s King Felipe VI to Barcelona.
As reported by BBC News, chanting “Catalonia has no king,” the protesters burned photographs of the king on a bonfire.
Fierce protests in the autonomous region have not ceased for weeks. The wave of unrest has risen ahead of Spain’s second general election this year.
The protesters are demanding the release of Catalonia’s former leaders, who were sentenced last month by Spain’s Supreme Court to 9–12 years in prison for organising the 2017 independence referendum and rebellion.
