“The coronavirus outbreak is spinning out of control,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared during a meeting with journalists. RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, the coronavirus pandemic has turned into a crisis that is starkly different from similar situations in human life.
The Secretary-General noted that the number of lives lost to the coronavirus will soon cross the 1 million mark, calling the pandemic “the number one threat to security.”
According to Guterres, many are pinning their hopes on a vaccine, but there is no panacea against the pandemic. He stressed that a vaccine alone will not fix the situation.
“However, the vaccine must be viewed as a global public good, because COVID-19 knows no borders. We need a vaccine at an affordable price and accessible to all. A vaccine for everyone,” Guterres added.
He called for a significant increase in new and existing tools that can help in the fight against the disease, especially over the next 12 months.
