The death toll from the earthquake in government-controlled areas of Syria has reached 1,414. Some 2,357 people have been injured. This was reported by the SANA agency, citing Syrian Health Minister Hassan Muhammad al-Ghabbash.
The World Health Organization has estimated the total number of earthquake victims, including in non-government-controlled areas, at 8,500. UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric described the situation in Syria after the earthquake as catastrophic. UNICEF has deemed an outbreak of epidemics in the country following the earthquake possible.
It should be recalled that on the night of 6 February, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Syria and southeastern Turkey. The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has exceeded 35,000.
