Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that the death toll from the earthquakes in the country has reached 35,418. He made this announcement following a meeting of the cabinet in Ankara.
At the same time, he described the earthquakes as an exceptional natural phenomenon in terms of their scale and destruction.
“I extend my mercy to each of my 35,418 deceased citizens. I wish recovery to the 105,505 wounded who were rescued,” Erdogan said.
It should be noted that on the morning of February 6, at 04:17 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred in the Pazarcik district near the city of Marash in Turkey. Approximately 42 aftershocks were recorded, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 6.6. Later, another earthquake of magnitude 7.5 was registered.
A seven-day period of mourning has been declared in Turkey.
