Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has stated that with its attack on Ukraine, Russia has violated the most basic rules of international law.
“The world community will not forget this shameful day. Together with our partners, we will respond to it. Our full solidarity is with Ukraine,” the minister said.
Baerbock stated that a comprehensive and most effective package of sanctions against Russia will be implemented.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also announced that at the crisis meeting with the leaders of EU member states to be held this evening, the issue of reaching agreement on targeted sanctions in areas of heavy, strategic significance will be discussed.
“Putin is bringing war back to Europe. The EU firmly condemns the barbaric attack on Ukraine. We will not allow Putin to collapse the security system that has ensured peace and stability in Europe,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also warned of a decision to isolate Russia on an unprecedented scale. In his words, February 24 is “the darkest day for Europe since the Second World War.”
