French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has stated that the European Union could impose new sanctions against Turkey.

During a speech in the French Parliament, Le Drian specifically said: “At our request, on 13 July the EU ministers will convene a meeting, the sole topic of whose agenda will be the issue of Turkey. At present, the European Union is applying sanctions against Turkey for carrying out oil exploration activities in territory under the sovereignty of Cyprus. During the meeting, the question of new sanctions could be brought to the agenda,” said the French Foreign Minister.

It should be noted that in recent times the relations between the two countries have been strained as a result of Turkey’s drilling operations in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea (near the shores of Cyprus) and Ankara’s actions in Libya and Syria.

Let us recall that days ago, French President Emmanuel Macron had also stated that Turkey’s intervention in the Libyan conflict is criminal.
