Tens of thousands of Israelis have gathered in Tel Aviv against the controversial judicial reforms initiated by the government. Notably, against the backdrop of the mass protests, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant called on the ruling coalition to halt the process of legal changes in the country, as it is causing a “schism”. The British newspaper The Guardian reported on this.
On Saturday, Israel’s Defence Minister stated that “the authorities must stop the legislative process” for one month, taking into account the rift created in society regarding the changes.
“The growing social divide has made its way into [the army] and security bodies. This is a clear, immediate and tangible threat to Israel’s security,” said Gallant, who is a member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party.
The minister’s statement was welcomed by the opposition leader.
According to Israeli media, about 200,000 people took part in the protest demonstrations in Tel Aviv on Saturday.
It should be recalled that the mass protests in Israel began in January, when the ruling coalition announced its package of changes, which, according to the government, is necessary to rebalance the powers between legislators and the judicial system. Those fighting against this change maintain that in this way the authorities are attempting to limit the functioning of the judiciary.
