Nancy Pelosi is stepping down as leader of the Democratic caucus in the US House of Representatives. She made the announcement on Thursday, speaking at a session of the lower chamber of the legislature.
“With great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek re-election as leader of the Democrats in Congress. It is time for a new generation to lead the caucus,” Pelosi said.
Nevertheless, she will not retire; she will continue to work in the lower chamber of Congress.
Currently, Pelosi holds the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in Congress. However, in the midterm elections held on 8 November, the Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives, and control will pass to the Republican Party.
The next Speaker of the lower chamber of Congress will be a Republican. As expected, Kevin McCarthy, who until now has been the Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, will soon assume this position.
