United States armed forces on Thursday carried out a series of airstrikes against structures in Syria that, according to Washington, may be linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This was announced by the Pentagon press service.
It noted that the attack took place on March 23 in northeastern Syria, following a drone strike on a military base of the US-led international counter-terrorism coalition, which resulted in the death of one American contractor and five soldiers. According to the American intelligence community, the drone was Iranian.
“At President Joe Biden’s direction, I have authorized US Central Command forces to conduct precision airstrikes this evening against a facility used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in eastern Syria,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
He added that the airstrikes were in response to an attack by groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as recent attacks on coalition forces in Syria.
“As President Biden made clear, we will take all necessary measures to defend our people and will always respond at a time and place of our choosing,” Austin added, noting that “no group will strike our troops with impunity.”
