Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has approved the amendment regarding the possibility of participating in elections again, reports Gazeta.
As the source notes, Putin deemed it necessary to coordinate the amendment with the Constitutional Court. According to him, if the Russian Federation’s Constitutional Court concludes that the amendment on the possibility of Putin’s re-election conforms to the Fundamental Law, only then is it possible for him to continue his work in the office of president.
Moreover, Putin sees no need for early elections to the State Duma. LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky had earlier proposed holding early parliamentary elections after the adoption of changes to the Fundamental Law. “Naturally, the final decision is yours. But if there is no agreement within parliament on this issue, and there is not, as the chairman of the State Duma told me (Volodin – ed.), then I see no need for early elections to the State Duma,” said the Russian president, speaking before the lower house of the Russian parliament, reports RIA Novosti.
He also sees no expediency in the proposal to remove the limit on the number of presidential terms from the Constitution. This initiative was put forward on Tuesday by United Russia deputy Valentina Tereshkova. “At a time when the country still has many problems, but when the political, economic, and social spheres are gaining internal stability and maturity, when the state is becoming, undoubtedly, stronger and harder to strike from outside, then, certainly, the possibility of the changeability of power is pushed to the forefront. It is necessary to ensure the course of the country’s development,” said the Russian president.
He stressed that over the “long-term perspective” the public must have guarantees of the periodic change of power. “We must think together with you about future generations,” added the head of state.
