Russian President Vladimir Putin has commented on the question of the territorial status of Mountainous Karabakh on the air of the “Russia 1” television channel, reports RIA Novosti.
“Armenia does not recognise the independence and sovereignty of Mountainous Karabakh. That means that from the standpoint of international law, both Mountainous Karabakh and all the regions adjacent to it have been and remain an inalienable part of the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” said the Russian president.
He stressed that the conditions of membership in the CSTO did not oblige Russia to become drawn into the conflict.
“The CSTO treaty provides for mutual assistance in the event of an attack on the territory of a country party to that treaty. No one has attacked the territory of the Republic of Armenia, and that gave us no right to take direct part in the hostilities,” explained the Russian president.
At the same time, within the framework of military-technical cooperation with Yerevan, Moscow has fully fulfilled its obligations, he added.
“I assure you that Armenia has not felt abandoned or forgotten. And Russia has done everything to ensure that this was not the case,” he said.
