Russia’s Armed Forces will be equipped in 2021 with the newest “Drel” (Дрель) aerial bomb. This was announced on 9 May by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov.
“The results of the tests have confirmed the combat effectiveness of the ‘Drel’ aerial bomb,” Borisov said. According to him, the acquisition of the aerial bomb is planned within the framework of the state defence order for the current year, as well as for 2022-2023.
Borisov had earlier stated that tactical aviation aircraft would be armed with the newest aerial bomb.
It became known in September 2016 that a new aerial bomb was being developed in Russia. According to the developer, it is capable, after being launched, of flying autonomously towards a target located at a distance of up to 30 km.
At the same time, it was noted that an aircraft armed with the aerial bomb could avoid entering the enemy’s air defence zone and escape additional danger. The aerial bomb is practically impossible to detect with the help of radars.
