Two people have been killed during protests in Belarus, one of them in Minsk. This was announced by the acting Minister of Health of the country, Vladimir Karanik, who, at the request of the protesters, came out to the doctors gathered in front of the building of the Ministry of Health of Belarus.
According to him, there are 158 people in hospitals, three of them in serious condition. The condition of all the others is stable, not dangerous. On Okrestin Street there are six detainees, who are being examined by doctors. The minister said that doctors are allowed to approach the offenders.
It should be noted that on 9 August, presidential elections were held in Belarus. According to the final results of the Central Election Commission (CEC), the incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, won with 80.1%, while Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Lukashenko’s main rival, garnered 10.12% of the votes and did not recognise the results of the elections. After the re-election of the incumbent president, a wave of mass protests rose in the country, which turned into clashes with police.
Later, a strike began at the country’s large industrial enterprises, whose employees demanded new elections and an end to the harsh treatment of protest participants. The headquarters of all opposition candidates announced that they do not recognise the official results of the elections.
