Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, summing up the year, stated that no serious progress was recorded in the negotiations on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict in 2019.
“I think it is due to several reasons — the non-constructive position of the Armenian authorities, the lack of sufficient pressure on Armenia by international organizations,” the Azerbaijani leader explained during a conversation with the media.
He also added that the “contradictory and inappropriate” statements of the Armenian leadership also had a negative impact on the negotiation process.
“The Armenian authorities state that Azerbaijan should conduct negotiations with Nagorno-Karabakh. That is absurd. Today, 90 percent of the servicemen in Nagorno-Karabakh are citizens of Armenia, and for that reason the negotiations are conducted between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Ilham Aliyev declared, concluding: “In 2019, the format of the negotiations remained unchanged, despite all attempts by Armenia to change it. I think that is our diplomatic success.”
