On 13 November, a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place in Washington. During a joint press conference, Erdogan criticised the adoption by American legislators of a resolution on the Armenian Genocide, saying that it “casts a shadow on Turkish-American relations”:
“Events that are 104 years old should be judged by historians, not by politicians. We have nothing to hide. I want to state clearly that Turkey is in favour of dialogue and open discussion and debate. We have also conveyed our proposal to the Armenian side to open the archives bilaterally and to create a commission of historians. I hope the Senate will remove the US from this flawed period created by the resolution adopted by the House of Representatives,” Erdogan declared.
It should be recalled that at the end of October, members of the US Congress’s House of Representatives adopted a resolution recognising and condemning the Armenian Genocide.
Incidentally, a protest against Erdogan’s visit was organised in Washington.
