Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has blocked the Senate from adopting a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide, News.am reports.
“I just met with Erdogan and President Trump and discussed the issues we face because of Turkey’s incursion into Syria. I hope Turkey and Armenia can resolve this issue together,” Graham said during a televised Senate session. Graham, considered an ally of Trump, added that senators “should neither embellish nor rewrite history.”
Under the rules of the upper chamber of Congress, any senator can block a legislative initiative.
During the session, the resolution was proposed by Robert Menendez, a Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“U.S. foreign policy must honestly reflect violations of human rights and crimes against humanity, as well as ethnic cleansing and genocide,” Menendez declared.
