Forest fires are raging in the south of France, in Spain and on the Italian island of Sardinia. Part of the local population has been evacuated. This is reported by DW.
In the west of the island of Sardinia, the fire has spread over an area of several thousand hectares, and some houses have been damaged.
In Italy, aircraft have been deployed to fight the fires. The Italian authorities have also appealed to the other EU countries, asking for assistance in fighting the fires.
In the south of France, thousands of firefighting units have likewise been deployed to fight the forest fires. Aircraft are also being used to extinguish the fires.
In the north-east of Spain, the fire has damaged 1,100 hectares of forest and agricultural land. More than a thousand firefighters are taking part in the firefighting effort. Dozens of people have been evacuated from the danger zones.
