The European Union is not naive and will not fall for Ankara’s latest deception. According to Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, Turkey has been given every opportunity, “but it has not taken advantage of it.”
He noted that Turkey’s last-minute statements will not deceive the EU. “The European Union is not naive,” he said. “Greece has, of course, always remained faithful to the idea of honest dialogue,” he said, insisting that Turkey must show that it respects international law as a permanent choice, not merely according to circumstance.
“In the same spirit, the EU has postponed decisions regarding measures and sanctions, declaring its readiness to examine a positive agenda of actions and policy toward Turkey, but on the condition that Turkey’s illegal actions cease once and for all,” he said.
“However, Ankara’s latest actions ‘cancel any prospect of dialogue and, unfortunately, leave no room for any positive agenda at the upcoming European Council summit,'” Dendias said.
Athens is also concerned about the period preceding Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony on 20 January, as Turkey may view this as an opportunity to accelerate its expansion plan in the eastern Mediterranean.
