Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has called the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia a change in the strategic balance, The Washington Post reported.
“China has stated in recent years that it must participate in the creation of the world order. Now it has taken an important step in this direction,” Kissinger said, emphasizing that it is thanks to China that an agreement on the return of diplomatic relations between previously irreconcilable adversaries became possible.
According to The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, the situation in the Middle East shows that the United States is no longer an “indispensable force in the region.”
Earlier, Iran and Saudi Arabia had agreed not to wage war against each other and not to engage in intelligence activities. Saudi Arabia expects Iran to fulfill the agreement reached with Riyadh through China’s mediation.
