Lebanon’s parliament, at its first session today, was unable to elect a new president for the country.
Notably, opposition circles put forward the name of deputy Michel Moawad, who received 36 votes (the number of members of the Lebanese parliament is 128), while pro-government circles cast 63 blank ballots, in a manner that brought down the electoral session.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, for his part, declared at the end of the session that the election of a new president could take place only in an atmosphere of consensus. He also did not answer questions about when the next electoral session would be held.
