Moscow expects that UN agencies, following the International Committee of the Red Cross, will join in addressing humanitarian issues in Karabakh, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“We hope that other humanitarian agencies, primarily UN agencies, will join. I mean the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and, of course, there are also acute problems of preserving cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh. And here UNESCO can play its role,” he told reporters.
He noted that the International Committee of the Red Cross has been in the region for a long time, and its experience can be useful for other organizations.
“I think that the cessation of hostilities on the basis of those agreements, of course, creates additional opportunities for the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is present in Armenia and Azerbaijan, including Nagorno-Karabakh,” he told reporters.
According to him, the International Committee of the Red Cross can and has an important role to play in overcoming the consequences of what has happened in Nagorno-Karabakh.
