Naftali Bennett is to become Israel’s next prime minister.
Yair Lapid, leader of Israel’s opposition “Yesh Atid” party, has succeeded in forming a new cabinet of ministers. Lapid informed the country’s president, Reuven Rivlin, of this on the evening of 2 June. According to Lapid, the new government respects its opponents and will do everything possible to unite Israeli society.
Naftali Bennett, co-founder of the “New Right” party, will hold the post of prime minister for two years, after which Lapid will replace him. The current head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu, has held that office for 12 years.
On 5 May, the president of Israel had tasked Lapid with forming a new government within 28 days, since Netanyahu (of the “Likud” party) had not succeeded in creating a governing coalition within the time allotted to him.
