‘NATO’s brain is dead’: Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking about NATO, has declared that the alliance’s “brain is dead.” As reported by BBC News, Macron said the reason for this is the weakening of the commitment of the North Atlantic alliance’s main guarantor, the United States.   In an interview with The Economist, the French leader highlighted the US failure to consult NATO before withdrawing troops from northern Syria. As reported by BBC News, Macron said the reason for this is the weakening of the commitment of the North Atlantic alliance’s main guarantor, the United States.  

In an interview with The Economist, the French leader highlighted the US failure to consult NATO before withdrawing troops from northern Syria. He called into question NATO’s commitment to collective security.  

German Chancellor Angela Merkel responded, saying she does not agree with Macron’s “such blunt words.”

NATO, which next month will mark the 70th anniversary of its founding at a summit to be held in London, also responded, declaring that the structure continues to remain strong.
