Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that the judicial reform bill, which has sparked mass protests in the country, would be postponed until the summer. As reported by the state radio station Kan, the head of government informed the partners in the ruling coalition of his decision, TASS reported.
It was noted that Netanyahu and the country’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir had agreed on the suspension of the bill yesterday.
Within the “Jewish Power” party, which Ben-Gvir heads, it was stated that at the end of the coalition consultations it was decided to postpone the approval of the judicial reform in parliament until the summer session. Until then, Ben-Gvir had been categorically opposed to the postponement.
Kan noted that instead, Netanyahu agreed to form a new security structure — a National Guard — which is to be placed under the control of the National Security Ministry headed by Ben-Gvir.
According to another report, the Israeli Prime Minister offered to cancel the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on condition that he relinquish his mandate in the Knesset. The state broadcasting channel reported that Gallant categorically refused the offer.
