Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has stated that Finland and Sweden are trying to arrange a new meeting with Turkish representatives to discuss the prospects and issues of NATO membership. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the Turkish newspaper Sabah wrote that trilateral negotiations between Turkey, Sweden and Finland on the application for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance had been postponed indefinitely at Ankara’s request.
“Finland, Sweden and Turkey are trying to arrange a new trilateral meeting, where an assessment of the situation will be given,” Haavisto declared.
Let us recall that earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking about the burning of the Quran during a protest in Stockholm last Saturday, said that Ankara does not support Sweden’s application to join NATO.
“The vile act committed in Sweden is an insult to all who respect fundamental human rights and freedoms, including the rights and freedoms of Muslims,” the Anadolu agency quoted Erdogan’s words.
If Sweden does not respect Turkey, as well as the religious feelings of Muslims, then on the issue of NATO membership “it will receive no support from us,” he stressed.
