Turkey has sentenced two journalists to prison for publishing state secrets.
Müyesser Yıldız, news editor of OdaTV, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison, while İsmail Zeki Dükel, Ankara correspondent for TELE1, received a sentence of one year and 15 days on the same charge.
Yıldız and Dükel were arrested on 12 June on espionage charges, but were subsequently accused of publishing state secrets in connection with reports on Turkey’s military incursion into Libya.
Military officer Erdal Baran was also sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for passing information to Yıldız and Dükel, T24 reports.
Turkey is one of the countries that imprisons the most journalists in the world. Since the failed coup attempt in 2016, the ruling Justice and Development Party has intensified pressure on dissident journalists.
